Reigning champions Amak Towing won this year’s rec softball league, but the veteran Skagway team almost lost — to their kids.
The tournament came down to two teams in Sunday’s championship round: Amak Towing and the Young and the Hopeless.
“It was really cool because every one on the team except two we all coached in little leage teeball or coach pitch,” said John “O’D” O’Daniel of the Young and the Hopeless.
Because Amak Towing didn’t lose once douring the tournament, the Young and the Hopeless needed to beat them twice in order to win the champion ship.
O’Daniel said the Young and the Hopeless beat Amak Towing in the first game soundly with a 13-5 final score, but Amak came back to win the second game 19-11.
“We all used to joke that we would retire before our kids beat us,” he said. “I guess we stayed in one year too long.”
