SHS wrestlers finish fourth at meet

The Skagway High School wrestling team placed two wrestlers in the top four at a recent meet in Wrangell that included big schools Juneau and Ketchikan.
Kyle Fairbanks and Crystal Ketterman wrestled in the consolation finals but were unable to take their final matches, and finished fourth.
Fairbanks, in his third battle of the season with Petersburg’s Brian Newman, was leading going into the final period, said Skagway coach Josh Coughran, but got caught in a bad position and was pinned.
Ketterman won a tough match over a Thorne Bay opponent to get into the consolation final. Down in points, she scored a reversal and near fall at the end of the match to win 12-8. Coughran said the Thorne Bay kid came over to shake his hand and remarked, “Man, she’s tough!”
However, Ketterman lost in a fall to Logan Harvey of Juneau in her final match.
As for the freshmen, Michelle Harris had a tough meet trying to battle the bronchitis bug that is going around, but Madeleine Nyhagen made progress, getting to the third period in a match for the first time this season.
Coughran kept some of his sick wrestlers away from practice last week. They head to Juneau Nov. 22-23 for the last meet of the season before Regionals Dec. 6-7 in Craig.
