NOTICE OF PUBLIC SCOPING
Proposed Transfer of Helicopter Tour Landings to Meade Glacier
USDA Forest Service
Tongass National Forest
The Juneau Ranger District is beginning an environmental analysis of a request by TEMSCO Helicopters, Inc. to transfer 2,800 helicopter tour landings currently permitted by the Bureau of Land Management on the West Creek Glacier to the Meade Glacier, which is located on the Tongass National Forest. TEMSCO proposes to transfer the landings, because ablation near the toe of West Creek Glacier is reducing access to safe, flat tour areas. Based on current trends in ablation, TEMSCO believes it will no longer be able to provide a secure environment for aircraft or passengers at the West Creek Glacier after the 2008 tour season. By transferring the landings to the Meade Glacier, TEMSCO could continue to safely meet the public demand for commercial guided recreation opportunities at the current level.
For further information, contact Mike Driscoll at the Juneau Ranger District (907) 789-6282. The Forest Service invites public comments on this proposal and participation in scoping meetings to be held in Haines and Skagway, as shown below. A final decision will not be made until review of comments and the draft Environmental Assessment are complete.
