Volleyball team advances to State
The Skagway High volleyball team took second place at the 2A region tournament in Klawock last weekend and advanced to this week’s State Tournament in Anchorage.
The SHS girls faced Barrow in a first round game on Thursday afternoon after this issue went to press. To check on their progress, go to www.asaa.org and click on the volleyball link to the 1A-2A-3A West tourney at Dimond High School.
Skagway coach Ashley Bowman said the team beat Hoonah in three straight games and then lost to Klawock. This put them in another match with Hoonah, whom Skagway defeated in four games.
In the final match against Klawock, she said Skagway played the best they had all season – even taking them to a 23-25 game – but could not overcome the Chieftains on their home court.
“We really want to meet up with Klawock again,” she said.
Bowman said Emily Herbig had an amazing tournament serving the ball, and Paige Hahn and Jessie Ellis “were good at seeing everything around them, and hitting the holes where others aren’t covering.”
Hahn and Ellis made the all-conference team.No photos were available by press time.

STATE UPDATE - The Skagway team fell in the first round to eventual state champ Barrow, and then lost in the consolation round to Seldovia. Game reports in Dec. 24 issue.

Wrestlers wrap up season at regionals

The Skagway High wrestling team finished the season at the Region 2A-3A Tourney in Wrangell last weekend. None of the wrestlers advanced to the state tournament.
Junior Mickey Wilson got close. He won his first match by pin, but lost his second match to eventual region champ, Ryder Torgeson of Sitka. In the consolation round, Wilson won another match by pin, but then lost to the eventual fourth place winner. Wilson scored Skagway’s only points of the meet, but he needed a top four placement to advance to State.
The other four SHS wrestlers did not win a match. Thomas Etue was hoping for his third straight trip to State, but he drew eventual region champ Jake Houston of Sitka in the first round. The Sitka wrestlers were new to the 2A-3A field, having dropped down from 4A this year.
“Thomas wrestled well but just could not pull it out,” said coach Christophe “Duppy” Ticarro.
Ticarro said it was unfortunate no one from Skagway made it to State, but the kids worked hard all season, were focused, and gained experience for next season. They will miss senior Tylor Forester, who suffered a season-ending shoulder injury last month, he said, but the rest of the team should be back.
