The Skagway High volleyball team opened its season by rallying to win their division at the All Comers Tourney in Juneau Oct. 29-30.
Coach Cindy O’Daniel said the team had a couple of rough games in pool play to start the tourney but held their own against Juneau’s best squad and then marched undefeated through the Silver division.
In pool play, Skagway lost the close match to Juneau 1 by just a couple points, and then beat Juneau 3 before falling to Hoonah and Sitka 1.
That dropped them to the Silver bracket, where they cleaned up.
“It was double elimination and we did not lose another match,” she said.
The Panthers beat Thorne Bay, Juneau 3, Sitka 3 and then Juneau 3 again in the division final.
“They responded really well,” O’Daniel said. “We are working well on our rotations, but we have to iron out some wrinkles.”
The team faced a local women’s team Tuesday for their Senior Night to get warmed up for seeding tournament at Klawock this weekend.
Seniors Jayce Ellis, Anna Korsmo and Rori Leaverton, and they were honored prior to the match, which the Panthers lost in a thriller: 18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 20-25, and 14-16.
