Oil Pipeline Strong Alternative.
An oil pipeline from Skagway to Edmonton, Alberta became a more realistic alternative, Saturday, when representatives of Westcoast Transmissions of Vancouver and Foothills Pipelines unveiled a plan for the Alaska Highway Oil Project before a joint meeting of the Skagway-Haines-Juneau-Whitehorse-Atlin chambers of commerce. The Skagway route is now favored over the Delta Junction route.
Westcoast representative Ed Mirosh said construction of the pipeline, a tank farm and pump station would provide Skagway with 660-750 jobs during construction and 50-75 permanent jobs after construction. He said tankers would use existing facilities, probably the ore terminal dock, and pump oil to a tank farm on the third bench above Yakutania Point. - Sept. 28, 1978

Chartier, Danielson win.
Newcomers Harry Chartier and Gary Danielson are in; incumbents Irene Henricksen and Ed Fairbanks are out. In what proved to be one of the most popular elections in Skagway’s history, 58.6 percent of the city’s registered voters (337 out of 575) turned out Oct. 3 and elected Chartier and Danielson to the Skagway City Council. Chartier captured the one-year seat with a 16 vote win over Fairbanks, and Danielson ran away with one of the three-year seats, netting 192 votes. The other three-year term will be decided in a runoff Oct. 17 between James Richards and incumbent Chris Rohlf. Richards captured 121 votes and Rohlf trailed him with 113. Forty percent or 135 votes were needed to win. – Oct. 12, 1978

Richards, Chartier win.
In a runoff election that was almost as popular as the Oct. 3 general election, James Richards defeated incumbent Chris Rohlf for a seat on the City Council and Gayle Chartier unseated school board president Ronald Hunz. – Oct. 19, 1978
