Dominique Foote qualifies for State X-C; SHS team ‘ran for Boyd’ at regionals in Sitka

Skagway sophomore Dominique Foote, running in his first SE regional race, finished in the 11th position to qualify for the ASAA State Cross-Country Championship.
Foote’s time was 18 minuntes, 37 seconds on the Sitka course during the 1A-2A-3A race on Sept. 28. He was the only Skagway runner to qualify. Freshman Ethan Goebel was close, finishing in 16th place, just two seconds behind the 15th place runner. The boys’ team took fourth in the team competition, again just missing the top three to qualify for State.
The Skagway girls were led by another freshman, Hailey Jensen, who finished just out of the state-qualifying runners in 18th position.
“We're a young team, and as a young team, we ran well,” said coach Kent Fielding. “It wasn't our best race - it was (third place) Wrangell's best race of the year - but we beat a lot of teams (Petersburg, Haines, Yakutat, Klawock and some others). The guys should be proud.”
Of course, Boyd Worley’s passing the day before was on everyone’s mind, and the team ran for him.
“As far as running for Boyd, even in Sitka, other coaches were talking to about how great a person Boyd was, and we felt that we should honor Boyd by dedicating the race to him,” Fielding said. “I mean, after all Boyd did for Skagway, we could as least run one race in his honor and in his memory.”
Foote went on to Anchorage last weekend, where he took 50th in the state among 119 runners in the 1A-2A-3A race. His time of 18:47.2 was the 10th fastest among the 26 runners from Southeast schools. Sitka was the top SE school in 5th place, well behind winner Grace Christian which placed its all of its runners in the top 12. SE champ David Wilcox of Sitka finished 15th.
