Highway opening date.
Construction on the Skagway-Carcross Highway should be completed on both Alaskan and Canadian sides by Sept. 15, but highway officials on both sides of the border are reluctant to say that the highway will be officially open at that time.
Bob Davies, Canadian project engineer, told The News Wednesday that final inspection on his side would occur Sept. 8. Davies said the road would be passable at that time, but not officially open.
I am reluctant to use the word open, he said. Presidents and government ministers open roads. - Aug. 31, 1978
Women rowers land.
The long race is over for Ginger Cox and Tish Davis. The two women who have been rowing from Seattle to Skagway since June 22 reached their destination here Friday Sept. 1 at 6:45 p.m.
An unofficial welcoming committee consisting of speed boats and a low flying airplane escorted the two women in their wooden boat into the Skagway small boat harbor where they were met on the dock by about 100 citizens. Sept.. 7, 1978
WP&YR needs $6 million.
The narrow gauge railroad that has been the prime source of economy for this community for 80 years has announced that it may cease operation if it does not receive financial assistance by the end of this year. If the White Pass and Yukon Route does shut down the railroad,approximately 175 people in Skagway will be out of work.- Sept. 21, 1978
Thirteen candidates.
The setting is complete for the city election on Oct. 3. By 5 p.m. last Tuesday, six candidates had filed for two three-year seats on the City Council, and two persons had filed for the single one-year seat.. Five persons had filed for a single seat on the Skagway School Board.
