Fjord Fest

A Music and Dance Jam Spectacular!

Join your friends and neighbors for an end-of-the-season bash from 1 p.m.-1a.m. this Saturday, Aug. 27 at Seven Pastures Field in Skagway. Groove to the last days of summer dancing along the banks of the Skagway River as a witness to the stark mountain mindscapes of the fabled Gateway to the Klondike.
It’s a fundraiser for community radio KHNS-FM, so you can bet it’s for the music and good times, according to a press release. Ten percent of the gate receipts also will go to Buckwheat Donahue’s Heartbeat Trail walk and paddle from Miami to Nome to benefit Skagway’s Dahl Memorial Clinic.
Fjord Fest features a big stage bursting with plenty of music, dance, and special events worthy of your exciting summer season.
Musical lineup includes the Flying Other Brothers, Deering and Down, Tony Scott and the Valley of the North Wind Boys, and The Flying Hominies.
• Flying Other Brothers: Riding high on their recent national CD release, San Francisco Sounds, this 8-piece Bay Area-based supergroup features keyboardist Pete Sears (Jefferson Starship, Rod Stewart, Hot Tuna, Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead), lead guitarist Barry Sless (Phil and Friends, Kingfish, David Nelson Band, Cowboy Jazz), and drummer Jimmy Sanchez (Roy Rogers, Boz Skaggs, JJ Cale, Dr. John) with an array of other West Coast jam heroes.
• Deering And Down: What are the chances that a Skagway guitar monster could team up with a Juneau songbird, move to Memphis and change the world? See for yourself. The Reverend Neil Down's classic rock riffs sustain a wall of shimmering crunch behind our full-hearted beauty channeling the voices of Patsy, Janis, and Lucinda. We are honored to welcome them back home.
• Tony Scott and the Valley of the North Wind Boys: Skagway’s accordion funmaster teams up with fiddle, mando, stand-up bass, and guitar for that high energy jamming good time they’ve delivered all summer at the historic Red Onion Saloon. Their music lifts your feet and the corners of your mouth.
• Flying Hominies: The churning force behind Lunchmeat and the Pimentos and the Sofa Kings brings you a Ditty-Bop boy-girl band that'll set you spinning. Multi-instrumental virtuoso Eric Holle mixes it with Christy Hays, Lindy Dickson, and Eli Jones to make beautiful sounds to echo within the walls of our home, the deepest fjord in North America.
• The Spirit Story Dancers Present Northwest Supernatural Mask Dance Odyssey: You’ve never seen a pulsating frenzy like this. Inspired by his early days with the original Chilkat Dancers, Haines artist Tresham Gregg has produced dazzling dance performances for 40 years, but the Spirit Story Dancers take the prize. Amazing costumes and original masks adorning lithe and expressive dancers will move your festival experience to a higher plane.
• Eternal Flame: As openers for Laura Love at the Southeast Alaska State Fair, the myriad candle dancers of Eternal Flame sent 600 party hogs into hushed reverence. Don't miss some of the fairest maidens of our fjord at the height of their incandescence
• The Insanity of Vaughn Avery: Every festival needs a mime/magician and Vaughn Avery is one of the best. As a kid Vaughn ran away with the circus and never looked back. After an illustrious career in San Francisco and Eugene, Mr. Insanity relocated to Southeast Alaska where his work has already been seen by thousands.
In addition there will be free camping on the banks of the Skagway River, an artists midway, a beer garden, and concessions.
Tickets start at $25 but there are deals for KHNS members and families. Here is the tentative festival line-up.
