The Plumbers celebrate around the trophy, Hambone Teresa Wilson slides into third, Plumber pitcher Shanna Vetter stays strong through five games; Ben Seale connects on the winning sac. fly; and and the crowd belts out “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”.

Championship Saturday crowns Plumbers

B&S Plumbing, a combination of the old RBI and Alaska Liquor teams, came back to knock off defending champ Hambones Aug. 4 to win the Skagway Coed League championship. After defeating a surprising Skagway Brew Co. team, the Plumbers had to beat the top seed Hambones twice. The Plumbers jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first game, holding off the ‘Bones in the final inning for a 10-6 win. The final game was a classic defensive battle, with the score tied 3-3 going into the final inning. In the top of the seventh, Plumbers Wade Brown and Shanna Vetter got on base with singles, bringing up Ben Seale, who hit a perfect sacrifice fly to score Brown from third. That’s all they needed for a 4-3 win, as their defense kept Hambones runners from getting past second base in the bottom of the inning.

Seale, Rowe, 'Run 4 Fun' take top spots in Yukon River Trail Marathon

Many Skagway residents made their way to Whitehorse last weekend to participate in the grueling Yukon River Trail Marathon, and they represented the community well with several top finishes.
Ben Seale won the Open Men division of the marathon with a time of 3:44:39, followed shortly by Daniel Rowe, who took the silver. What was amazing about Seale’s win was it came just a day after he played five softball games and got the winning sac. fly for B&S Plumbing.
Elizabeth Ruff came in ninth among the Women’s Half Marathon runners and Janine Zimni finished right behind her. The Womens Four Relay team of Amanda Jensen, Shanna Vetter, Heather Seale and Hillary Smith finished first in 3:42:22.
“Team Klupar,” comprised of Rosemary and Karl and their daughter Olivia, tried the event for the first time this year, and Rosemary said she’d do it again, albeit with a little more preparation.
“It wasn’t as hard as I actually expected it to be,” she said the next day. “I’m actually walking today!”
Rosemary said the trail was beautiful and participants ranged from competitive to chatty.
“I think everyone should do it,” she said. – CD
