HARD CHARGERS

Shortstop Thomas Etue (left) of the Yankees makes a great play in the Little League championship game against the Mariners on June 29 as Teslyn Korsmo gets to her base. In a classic pitchers’ duel between the Yanks’ Jake Henricksen and the M’s Brent Beckner, it looked as though the Yankees might pull off a 1-0 upset. But a last inning rally by the M’s, capped off by an RBI single by Devin Fairbanks, gave his team the championship. Fairbanks was justifiably mobbed at midfield by his teammates.

Carrie Cummings (right) of Juneau’s Hawaiian Delights softball team digs out a grounder in the championship game of the International Softball Tourney last Sunday in Skagway. The Juneau team routed the Trappers of Whitehorse, 20-4, as Cummings made some great plays at third and started off a first inning rally with a hit. The Trappers, playing their sixth game of the day, were no match.
“There was a lot of good competition this year,” Cummings said, adding that most teams played them close, even though they lost just one game all weekend.
Skagway’s Vigilantes just missed the championship, falling 12-11 to the Trappers, and took the third place trophy. Twelve teams competed from Skagway, Juneau, Haines and the Yukon.
