Joe G. Kasler, former Skagway resident, passed away in Richland, Wash. on June 15, 2011. He was one week shy of his 81st birthday.
Joe was born and raised in Frankfort, Indiana. Joe was a life-time railroader, and he was a hostler / engineer with WP&YR from 1971 through 1983. He and his wife, Bert, raised their four children in Skagway.
Joe was an avid Skagway Panther basketball supporter during the 1970s. He was well known for working with Jack Brown of Skagway TV to provide the color commentary to the live broadcasts of the games. Joe and Bert moved to Richland in 1983 where he worked for the railroad that served the Hanford area.
He is survived by his wife Bert of Richland; son Stan Kasler and friend Janet of Juneau, daughter Laurinda Wilkes and husband Scott of North Pole, son Jeff and wife Lori of Grant’s Pass, Ore., and son Greg and wife Julie of Beaverton, Ore.; and 12 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. – Submitted by the family
