SHS awards night becomes the Ketterman procession

By JEFF BRADY
Crystal Ketterman has been deserving of many accolades during her high school years, and May 4 was her night to gather up the hardware.
The Skagway senior was named Student of the Year and Female Athlete of the Year, and also was awarded the George Thiel Memorial Award for the best student athlete, in addition to several awards for individual academic and interscholastic activities.
Speaker Boyd Worley called Ketterman “the perfect lady” with the beautiful smile, who will take you down to the mat in a heartbeat. Activities Director Gary Trozzo said she “motivates and encourages students.”
Worley thanked students for upholding Skagway’s reputation when traveling to meets and events. He called all-state basketball player Savannah Ames the perfect example of “fair play, with her game face on all the time,” as observed by an opposing coach who taught kids to emulate her. And he and others cited Michelle Harris’s ability to turn from a girl who spent a lot of time on the floor her freshman year into the region’s most respected rebounder.
Looking at the crowd, he urged parents to not be shy about thanking a teacher or coach in person, or sending them a card. And for the students, he left them with these words: “My reward for living in Skagway is watching you grow up.”
It was a good year for SHS. Trozzo noted that this was the first year in the school’s history where someone qualified for State in every sport. Trozzo announced he will let someone else do the job next year so he can get more sleep, telling his successor to “pray for good weather and always have a good back-up plan (for when the ferries go down).”
