Panthers cruise in final homestand

The SHS basketball teams have packed a lot of games into the last two weeks, and both squads have emerged as top contenders in the region as they roll into the final stretch before regionals. The boys team joined the girls in the statewide rankings this week. Both are ranked number 4.
The Lady Panthers, with an injured Savannah Ames on the bench, fell to Klawock at home, but the team got her back and went 2-1 at the Tok Invitational. One of their wins was a classic double overtime thriller over 1A power Wainwright-Alak, as Ames scored a season-high 47 points. The girls also played well against 2A power Tok, but lost by six. Skagway easily knocked off Yakutat at home early this week.
The Panther boys team continued its hot streak – they haven’t lost since Jan. 25. Skagway posted easy wins over previously ranked Klawock, who was missing a star player on a disciplinary suspension, and then won three tough games to sweep the Tok Invitational, replacing Tok in the top five statewide. Despite being tired and flat-footed at times defensively following their road trip, the Panthers snagged crucial league wins at home against always-tough Yakutat, getting big games from seniors Jarrett Brown, Kyle Fairbanks, Jerod Moore, and Aaron Neitzer.
Both Panther teams were ready for a break.
“We’re playing well but we’re tired,” said girls coach Jeff Kasler. “We’re taking some time off,” added boys coach Lee Hartson, Jr.
Both coaches lauded their seniors before their final home games. More coverage of “Senior Night” will appear in the next edition as the teams head off on their final road trip to Kake and Angoon, just prior to the Region V 2A tourney in Juneau. – JEFF BRADY
