The travel woes magnified for the Skagway varsity basketball teams over the past two weeks. The teams were unable to fly to Kake Jan. 28-29, and those games tentatively have been rescheduled for just before regionals next month.
Skagway then hoped to play Klawock at home last weekend, but the Chieftains canceled, despite the weather clearing up and a Friday ferry being available for the team to get here. Skagway won all games by forfeit.
The Skagway girls are the only unbeaten 2A team in the state, but were ranked third last week behind Ninilchik and Bristol Bay. The boys got their first wins but would have much rather earned them on the court, where they felt they had a good shot at beating Klawock (0-10).
Activities Director Gary Trozzo was able to put together games with Haines last weekend (see scores below). Haines had an opening in its schedule because the lay-up of the fast ferry Fairweather prevented the team from traveling to a tourney in Hoonah.
This weeks home games with the Porter Creek girls and F.H. Collins boys were cancelled when the highway closed Tuesday before the Whitehorse teams could get to town.
Trozzo is keeping his fingers crossed for this weekend. Skagways final scheduled homestand of the season is this Saturday and Monday (Feb. 12 and 14) versus Yakutat, which has two strong teams this year. The girls contests will feature a rematch of last years 2A region championship, won by the Lady Panthers. The Lady Eagles (10-4) are ranked fifth in the state. Skagway then is scheduled to travel to Angoon Feb. 18-19.

Trevor Cochran avoids a charge against Haines and feeds Josh Cotton with a pass in the key . JB
